Travel tips

Verona

The city of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has a lot to offer visitors, with a large number of options available for cultural entertainment. For those with a love of theatre and music, an opera can be enjoyed at the nearby Roman Amphitheatre.

Marvel at the 11th-12th century bronze door panels on San Zeno Maggiore, northern Italy's most ornate Romanesque church, or browse the food market in Piazza delle Erbe, the site of the city's old herb market. Crossing the river for the Renaissance gardens of Giardini Giusti is an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

Around Verona

Verona is within easy reach of Venice, Palladian Vicenza, or the old University city of Padua. Try wind-surfing or other watersports on Lake Garda, where you can visit the pretty town of Sirmione, with its hot spring spa. Alternatively, swim in a naturally-heated Roman swimming pool at Caldiero.

The province's situation makes it ideal for skiing during one of the winter breaks that the Italians call Settimana Bianca, or White Week. In summer, there are hiking, trekking, paragliding, and mountain biking options available throughout the region.

Eat and Drink

As part of the Veneto, Verona produces Soave, Valpolicella, and Bardolino wines. Cuisine includes the northern favourites of risotto, gnocchi (dumplings), polenta, and beef dishes, while a Veronese speciality is Pandoro, an orange-flower-flavoured cake.
