Located in southern Tuscany, the province of Grosseto is a wealth of adventurous possibilities. From the scenic Gulf of Follonica to the picturesque hills of Colline Metallifere, there are plenty of things to see and do in this province.
Sights and Attractions
The city of Grosseto features well-preserved sixteenth century walls and several important churches, including the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Beautiful seaside towns include Porto Ercole and Porto Santa Stefano, as well as the beach towns of Giannella and Feniglia.
In the mountains and hills of the Colline Metallifere, visitors will encounter Massa Marittima, a medieval town with a Romanesque-Gothic style cathedral. Other important attractions include the Candeliere Tower and the Palazzo Pretorio. The town is also close to Lago dell’Accessa and its Etruscan Park.
Other interesting destinations include the traditional villages of Scansano, Civitella Marittima, Castiglione della Pescaia and Manciano. Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana are also beautiful towns with several historic sites within the Citta del Tufo Archaeological Park.
The Maremma region features a lovely rolling landscape of with vineyards and village. The area has several hiking and biking trails, as well as horseback riding tracks. The Biancane Natural Park is also a good place to enjoy the outdoors. Bird watching is popular at the Laguna di Orbetello Natural Reserve near Lake Burano.
Monte Argentario is an exceptional place to enjoy the sea. A range of water sports including sailing are popular off the shores, where the Tuscan Archipelago is located. Diving is also outstanding in the area.
With a pretty natural backdrop, golfing is also excellent in Grosseto. Some of the province’s best golf courses are located at Punta Ala, Grosseto, Saturnia and Argentario.
The Tuscan Archipelago is located off the coast of Grosseto. Boats travelling to the islands depart from Civitavecchia to the south and Livorno to the north. The islands are picturesque places for hiking, biking, diving, water sports, sailing and other activities.
