Some touristic information
While not one of the most visited areas of the country, Molise in southern Italy offers a memorable destination off the beaten track. From quiet beach towns to dramatic mountain landscapes, there is plenty to see and do in the region.
Sights and Attractions
Beginning as a garrison town during the Middle Ages, Campobasso is the region’s capital. The city is renowned for its craftsmanship, particularly blade making. Main attractions include the fifteenth century Castello Monforte, the Romanesque Church of San Bartolomeo and the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte; an eleventh century church that was rebuilt during the sixteenth century.
Isernia is an historic town with a thirteenth century fountain and several prehistoric sites. Other interesting destinations in Molise include Venafro, the bell-making town of Agone and Scapoli, a town renowned for making bagpipes. Roman ruins are found in Sepino, while a mix of Roman and medieval sites are found in Larino.
The region’s hilly and mountainous landscape can be enjoyed throughout the year. The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise offers stunning, unspoiled natural landscapes. The park has exceptional walking and trekking routes, as well as mountain biking trails and camping opportunities. Scenic cycling routes also meander along the coastline. Ancient migratory trails, known as tratturi, provide unique routes for horseback riding in Pescolanciano, Campobasso and other areas of the region. Ski resorts in Campitello Matese and Capracotta are top spots for skiing and snowboarding.
Unlike Molise’s quiet beaches, the neighbouring regions of Abruzzo to the north and Campania to the south have popular resort towns dotting the coast. Lazio to the west is home to the nation’s capital, Rome.
