Travel tips

Viterbo

Viterbo is a province in the Lazio region of central Italy. Surrounded by medieval walls and ancient gates, its capital is also named Viterbo.

Sights and Attractions

The beautiful city of Viterbo is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Lazio. Main attractions include the Palazzo dei Papi, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Church of San Francesco and the Piazza del Plebiscito. Nearby is Tuscania, site of Etruscan ruins and necropolis. Stunning Etruscan sites are also found in Tarquinia, to the north of the capital. Other interesting destinations include Bagnia and Montecalvello.

Activities

Walking along the Via Francigena is a good way to appreciate the landscape and historical sites of Viterbo. The ancient pilgrimage route travels to Proceno, Acquapendente, Bolsena, Montefiascone, the Cimini Mountains, Vetralla, Capranica, Sutri and Monterosi.

The Bolsena Lake is a scenic spot for enjoying a variety of water sports, including canoeing and sailing. Trails around the lakes are also popular with horseback riding enthusiasts. Lake Vico is also a picturesque place for horseback riding, as well as hiking and mountain biking.

Day Trips

North of Viterbo is Orvieto in southwestern Umbria. The ancient city has remarkable architecture, including the Orvieto Cathedral, and the city also boasts underground caves and tunnels, as well as Etruscan ruins.
