Travel tips

Rimini

The Past

The historic city of Rimini is not just a seaside resort and has survived a fascinating history, which has left its marks on the city as it is today. Badly damaged during World War II, it retains a Roman bridge and arch, amphitheatre foundations, and the recently-excavated Surgeon's House. Fast forward to the Renaissance for Rimini's curious cathedral, Tempio Malatestiano and its castle, both built by Sigismondo of the local Malatesta family. Modern times saw the birth of film director Federico Fellini here, and a small museum is dedicated to Rimini's most imaginative son.

Eating

As you'd expect in a popular Italian holiday destination, cooking aromas permeate the warm night air. Take away Romagna's delicious filled flatbread, Piadina Romagnola, or eat in at a piadineria.

Outdoors

Wide sandy beaches stretch forty kilometres along the Adriatic Riviera, with one of Europe's biggest waterparks, Aquafan, at neighbouring Riccione. Every Easter, Rimini's sands host an Ultimate Frisbee tournament.

Other activities include swimming, sailing and beach sports, plus cycling, go-karting, golf and miniature golf, with horseback riding at nearby Vallechio. Emilia Romagna's countryside, nature reserves and mountains will delight hikers.

Around Rimini

Explore the tiny hilltop "republic" of San Marino, with its restored medieval town. Historic locations like Bologna and Ravenna are easily reached from Rimini's railway station, making this an ideal touring base.
