Pompei is best known for the extensive ruins of the Roman town Pompeii buried under ash by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. Since it was excavated, the ancient town has become one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations, with attractions such as the House of the Fawn, the Temple of Apollo, and many preserved mosaics and frescoes.
The modern city also attracts many pilgrims to the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompei.
Despite being cast as the villain, Vesuvius offers fantastic views from its summit across the Bay of Naples and the countryside of Campania, famous for its olive and lemon groves.
