Travel tips

Versilia

Versilia in Tuscany is a fashionable area in the Italian Riviera with resorts that are often frequented by celebrities. Located in the province of Luccsa, the region is on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Sights and Attractions

Pietrasanta stretches from Stazzema to Marina di Massa. The coastal town sits at the foothills of the Apuan Alps and boasts fine golden sand beaches. Main sites include the Cathedral of St. Martin and the Romanesque Church of Saint Augustine. Other towns in the region include Forte dei Marmi, Seravezza and Stazzema. Viareggio is the most well-known town in Versilia and the neighbouring Torre del Lago hosts a popular annual carnival, the Carnivale di Viareggio.

Activities

Most towns are backed by flat land with pine forests, an ideal area for relaxed walks or bike rides along easy paths. Beaches are also popular areas spots to relax or swim in the sea. For a bigger challenge, the Apuan Alps in the Apennine Mountains have excellent hiking and mountain biking trails. The distinctive marble rock of the Apuans contrast with lush wooded slopes of the Appenines, providing a scenic spot to explore. The picturesque Apuans are also home to several caves, an underground world that can be explored independently or with a guide. Stazzema is a great gateway to approximately 70 kilometres of caves.

Day Trips

South-west of Versilia is Lucca, an ancient city and provincial capital with roots in the Etruscan and Roman periods. The city’s walls were designed by Leonardo Da Vinci. Major attractions include a Roman amphitheatre, Torre delle Ore, Torre Guinigi, and the magnificent Duomo di San Martino. Pisa and its famous Leaning Tower is just 32 kilometres from Piestrasanta. One of Italy’s most iconic structures, construction on the tower began in the twelfth century.
