Lago d’Orta is a small lake in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The scenic lake is a quiet destination with beautiful Romanesque and Baroque architecture.
Sights and Attractions
San Giulio Island has picturesque buildings and is named after the fourth century saint, Julius of Novara. Orta San Giulio is a charming town on the eastern bank of the lake, and Omegna has several pretty bridges and the Romanesque Church of Sant’Ambrogio.
A pleasant trail runs through the Orta San Giulio peninsula to the Sacro Monte of Orta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy. Fishing, diving, sailing, water skiing and kayaking are also fun activities on the lake.
Lago Maggiore is located to the east and stretches into Switzerland. Hiking and biking routes linke Lago Maggiore with Lago d’Orta. About 35 kilometres away, Novara features roman walls and a stunning historic centre dominated by the cupola of the Basilica of san Gaudenzio.
