Travel tips

Salerno

Salerno in southwestern Italy sits on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The capital of the province of the same name, Salerno is a beautiful area to experience the culture and natural beauty of the Campania region.

Sights and Attractions

The lively town of Salerno is home to the twelfth century Duomo of Salerno. The Villa Communale is a lush area in the city centre with a variety of flowers and plants. Salerno is the largest city close to the famed Amalfi Coast, a popular holiday destination in the province of Salerno. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has scenic medieval fishing villages perched on cliffs overlooking the sea. Amalfi and Ravello are stunning cities for visitors.

Activities

Hiking along the coast is a great way to see the province’s striking landscape, including in and around Positano and other towns on the Amalfi Coast. Hill paths along the mountainous coastline are also idyllic settings for cycling. Sailing from Salerno and villages throughout the Amalfi Coast offers a great way to see the dramatic and picturesque coastline from the water.

Day Trips

Naples is less than an hour’s drive or train journey to the north-west. Historic Pompeii, a Roman town destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, is about 30 kilometres away.
