Travel tips

Venice

Venezia, the City of Water, with its famous canals, is known for its rich cultural and historic heritage, as well as its magnificent setting on the lagoon. Famous for its architecture and art, the Venezia area also has plenty of facilities for those who are looking for an active holiday. One of the best ways to explore Venice is on foot - you'll get plenty of exercise up and down those bridges.

Sight seeing

Piazza San Marco, with its beautiful basilica, is the place to see and be seen: sip an espresso or glass of Prosecco and watch the passeggiata or evening stroll. A gondola ride is a romantic way to see the city.
Venice is famous for its Carnival, which takes place in February, but there are many spectacular festivals and regattas held throughout the year.

Food and drink

Because of its setting by the sea, Venetian cuisine is renowned for its fish dishes. Baccala or creamed salt cod is a speciality. Try a Bellini, made with peach juice and Prosecco, followed by carpaccio of beef at Harry's Bar, where these recipes are said to have originated. Finish with Tiramisu, the luscious Venetian dessert.

Sports and outdoor activities

Aqualandia is a water park just outside Venice; perfect for some watery fun. For sailing and swimming you need to go to the Lido outside Venice. Nearer to the centre, the Venice Surf Club promotes SUP - Stand Up Paddle Surfing as a novel way to tour the city.
Golfers should try the famous Alberoni course, established in the 1920s by Henry Ford, and interesting routes of varying difficulty are available for avid cyclers, through the hills of Prosecco, along the Riviera coast and on some of the islands.
