Travel tips

Trentino-Alto Adige

Also known as Trentino-South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige in northeast Italy is a German and Italian speaking region. With one of the most remarkable landscapes in Europe, the region’s natural wonders include the Dolomites, the Fassa, Gardena and Fiemme Valleys, and the Pale di San Martino. The region is also a distinct meeting of Latin and Germanic cultures.

Sights and Attractions

Trento has a stunning Lombard Romanesque cathedral and the Castello del Buonconsiglio, a magnificent castle dating from the thirteenth century. Bolzano, a major gateway for the Dolomites, has a striking Gothic cathedral that blends Latin and Germanic influences. In Rovereto visitors can explore a fifteenth century castle, the St. Colombiano Hermitage and contemporary art at the MART Museum. The spa towns Comano Terme, Levico Terme, Merano, Peio and Rabbi are also popular destinations.

Activities

Skiing in the Dolomites and the southern Alps is within an hour’s drive of most towns. Top resorts include the Madonna di Campiglio in Val Rendena, Selva Val Gardena, Ortisei and Santa Cristina in Val Gardena, Canazei and Moena in Val di Fassa, and San Martino di Castrozza in the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park. During the summer, these areas are hotspots for mountain climbing, biking, hiking and camping. Excellent hiking routes also wind through Stelvio National Park and Val di Fassa.

Water sports are popular on Lago di Garda, Italy’s largest lake. Riva del Garda has two harbours that are perfect for sailing and windsurfing. The nearby mountains are also good options for climbing, hiking and mountain biking. Nago-Torbole on the north shore is also an excellent bet for sailing and windsurfing thanks to good winds.

Day Trips

Owing to this region’s location on Italy’s borders, a rich variety of day trips into the neighbouring countries are easily possible. To the west is Lombardy, a region that is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Milan and several scenic lakes. Venice, Verona and other world famous towns are found to the south in Veneto.
