Travel tips

Aosta Valley

The Valle d’Aosta, or the Aosta Valley, is a mountainous region in north-western Italy. The smallest and most remote of the country’s regions, the scenic Aosta Valley is situated in the Alps.

Sights and Attractions

Aosta, the regional capital with spectacular views of Mont Blanc, has a collection of Roman ruins and medieval sites. Remnants of walls, gates, towers, amphitheatres and other buildings are found within walking distance of each other. Other sites include the Cathedral of Aosta and the Romanesque-Gothic Church of Sant’Orso.

The mountains of Valle d’Aosta are also major attractions. Among the most scenic destinations is Punta Helbronner, where a terrace provides visitors with panoramic views of glaciers. Mount Fréty is accessible by cable car and is home of the Pavillion du Mont Fréty Natural Oasis.

Activities

The best way to experience Valle d’Aosta is outdoors. The region offers breathtaking climbing, canoeing, mountain biking and hiking. A variety of sports are practiced in the Ayas, Gressoney and Valsesia valleys of Monte Rosa. Trails are also found on Mount Frétry and Gran Paradiso National Park.

In the winter, Valle d'Aosta offers world-class skiing and snowboarding. Famous ski areas include Courmayer and Cervinia. Both areas are also great destinations for camping, hiking and mountain biking during warmer months.

Sion and Zermatt in Switzerland are to the north, while France and Mont Blanc are to the west. Fantastic ski resorts and a fine wine region in Piedmont are to the south and east of Valle d’Aosta.
